University of Ilorin VC Commends Student for Developing Campus Emergency Response App
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended a 400-level student of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Mr. Pelumi Banabas, for developing a campus emergency response application aimed at improving safety and rapid response within the university community.
The Vice Chancellor gave the commendation on Monday, March 2, 2026, while receiving winners of the 2026 TEC ASBE Innovation Summit in his office. The meeting was organised to formally introduce the Start-Up winners, the Scale-Up winner, and the Talent Hunt winners to the University management.
Prof. Egbewole described the innovation as both timely and impactful, noting that technological solutions such as the emergency response application are essential for enhancing safety systems within modern university environments. He also applauded the institution’s Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC) for providing the mentorship that enabled the successful development of the application.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far, the Vice Chancellor directed the TEC management to finalize all necessary procedures related to the project, including the formal registration of the company behind the application.
To further ensure the effectiveness of the innovation, Prof. Egbewole constituted a committee headed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation). The committee will work with TEC and other relevant stakeholders to conduct a pilot survey and testing of the application in order to assess its practical applicability within the university environment.
Earlier, the Director of TEC, Usman Adebimpe Raheem, explained that the visit was aimed at presenting the winners of the TEC ASBE Innovation Summit 2026 to the Vice Chancellor, as well as showcasing the newly developed emergency response application.
Prof. Raheem, a former Chairman of the University of Ilorin branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), also announced the winners across the different categories of the innovation summit.
In the Scale-Up category, the first position went to Ajetola Faith Timothy, followed by Olugbenga Israel Temitope in second place, while Nwaenyi Stanley Uchena emerged third.
For the Start-Up category, Owolabi Temiloluwa Funmibi secured the first position, with Abdulwahab Abdulrasaq taking second place and Lawal Zainab Temitope finishing third.
In the Talent Hunt category, Ariseloye Michael Oreofe emerged as the overall winner, followed by Abiola-Johnson Fowoke Cecilia in second place, while Emmanuel John Oluwadamilare claimed the third position.
Prof. Raheem noted that the emergency response application was fully developed by the University of Ilorin student under the mentorship of TEC. According to him, the platform functions as a rapid alert system designed to facilitate quick responses during emergencies.
He explained that in situations such as a fire outbreak in a hostel or elsewhere on campus, users can immediately send a message through the platform, which automatically alerts the fire service for prompt intervention.
In addition to fire response, the application integrates key support services including campus security, health services, and counselling units. Plans are also underway to expand the system to include other critical services within the university.
The development of the emergency response application highlights the growing impact of student-driven innovation at the University of Ilorin and underscores the importance of mentorship programmes such as those provided by TEC in nurturing practical solutions to real-world challenges.
